Barb Skivington, Owner and Creative Director of Faux Works, shares her 25+ years experience in the industry with her students while teaching a wide spectrum of decorative finishes. Founded in 1995, Faux Works is now a world-class, renowned instructional studio in High Point, NC.
Barb’s career as a professional decorative finisher began once she was inspired by work on her own 1837 farm house. Soon she was demonstrating finishing techniques at local home improvement stores and discovering that she loved to teach. She recalls, “It was like I’d found my place in the universe.”
Searching to learn more led her to Melanie Royals, who became a wonderful resource, colleague and friend. Barb turned Faux Works into a full time teaching studio combining her love for decorative finishing with her passion for teaching. She continually invests her time creating new finishing classes exploring new uses for pattern, plasters and other materials. She strives to offer her students a unique learning experience, encouraging them to express their creative side.
In 2001, Barb developed FauxCase, an apprenticeship/home showcase program. She later teamed up with Melanie Royals to expand this concept into The Art of Living, a program designed to nurture creative lifestyles and livelihoods and expose decorative finishing to a broader audience. Barb’s work has appeared in Better Homes and Gardens Decorative Paint Techniques and Ideas, Modello by Design, Renovation Style, Paint Décor, Southern Living, The Faux Finisher, Faux Effects World, North Carolina Design, and Artisphere. Her first book, Decorative Finishes Inspired by the South of France, co-authored with Melanie Royals, was published in 2008.
